The Census Bureau projects that 1 in 5 Americans will be elderly by 2050. A substantial number of the elderly prefer to age at home rather than live in retirement homes.  The VitalHome effort has been fueled by demographic changes and the availability of commodity sensors. Commodity sensors continue to proliferate - the new Apple Watch has an FDA approved ECG sensor.

A part of this effort we have converted a small lab space in the Computer Science Building into a VitalHome where vital sign data and other related sensing data are harvested continuously, non-invasively, and wirelessly using a network of strategically placed low-powered Raspberry Pis. This sensing environment can be used to design and implement a real-time, individualized, predictive health alert model that can accurately detect incipient signs of worsening prognosis for assisted living and age-at-home patients.

Some of the sensors that we already support include:

  • Heart rate sensors
  • Blood-oxygen sensors (SpO2)
  • Blood pressure measurements
  • Motion and vibration sensors
  • PM 2.5 and PM 10.0 particulate measurements
  • FitBit Charge
  • Smart mirrors
  • Bluetooth weight monitoring
  • ECG sensor (ongoing)
